A simple and sensitive spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of gatifloxacin (GT) andmoxifloxacin (MX) in pure form and in pharmaceutical formulations. The proposed method was based upon the formation of a ternary complex between palladium(II), eosin and the studied drugs in the presence of methyl cellulose as a surfactant and acetate buffer of pH (4.0-4.5). The ternary complex showed an absorption maxima at 552 and 549 nm for GT and MX, respectively. Apparent molar absorptivitieswere 2.4975ï‚´104 and 3.663ï‚´104Lmol-1cm-1 and SandellÂ’s sensitivities were 0.015 and 0.011ïÂÂg cm-2 for GT and MX, respectively. The solution of ternary complex obeyed BeerÂ’s law over the concentration range of 2.0-10 and 1.0-8.0 ïÂÂg ml-1 for GT and MX, respectively with minimum detection limits 0.216 and 0.184 ïÂÂg ml-1 for GT and MX, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of the studied drugs in their pharmaceutical formulations. The results obtained were in good agreement with those obtained using the reported method. A proposal of the reaction pathway was presented.
